Where did social network marketing come from, and why is it here? With the rise and rise of Web 2.0,
the increasing digitization of young people’s lifestyles and the sheer availability of information at any given point, director of insight at Viacom Brand Solutions had some truth in saying that ‘the dynamic has changed’.
Most people have access to 200+ individuals on their social network – ‘place something onto a social network site and it can be picked up around the world in seconds’, says Head of Communications at the British Heart Foundation, David Barker. Given the increasing digital shift, ‘enormous changes had to be made to our marketing as a result’, adds Barker. Indeed, results exceeded expectations – with these being even further beneficial given the relatively highly affordability of social network marketing when considering the alternatives. For instance, where Barker expected 100,000 members to sign up to the company’s Yoobot initiative, over 1m joined.
The dynamic has indeed changed – consumers now, contrary to the days of old, want control, levering unprecedented demands on brands. And brands best be prepared to meet them, or at least be well acquainted with the consumer-brand promiscuity popular among the ‘me’ youth of today. For instance, according to Alan Duncan, marketing director of Sony, such shameless capriciousness and ‘battering down the doors’ of business from the outside has ‘forced us to be much more open; now a consistent dialogue with consumers is expected’. In an increasing age of ever-changing developments in socio-market structure, bold new consumers best be targeted with specific methods such as social network marketing to ensure that brands do not get left behind.

The social networking dynamics have certainly changed. The days of past are long gone and now web 2.0 is knocking at the doors of marketers to change their old fashioned ways to market products. The new movement is niche-movement. New slogan is ‘community-driven-products’. New home is ‘social-networking-website’!
