What is Social Marketing?
Would you know the answer if anyone asked you “What is social marketing?”
To many the two terms do not go together since social is about going out and having fun, while marketing is about the hard sell.
Social marketing is about the systematic application of marketing techniques in a social environment, this includes life settings as well as online social marketing also known as social media marketing.
Life is social marketing, but not in a commercial way, in life we all market ourselves to make friends and influence others. This is the real basic principle behind social marketing, unlike commercial marketing it is directed towards the achievement of social good.
At a personal level social marketing is used for ones own personal good but can also be used on a grander scale to promote social well-being for a whole population. This extended approach is social marketing at its best, its most beneficial.
When it is social marketing which is used to target a large audience the impact can be substantial. The social aspects help the cause so the word spreads very quickly.
This is why many commercial marketers are attempting to use this social marketing concept through the principles of web 2.0 to promote their products. When a product takes off in this manner it “goes viral” this can increase sales exponentially.
